Our dedication to producing a PREMIUM engine has resulted in GEX becoming the largest Volkswagen production engine remanufacturer in North America. And, as the LEADER, GEX has set the standard for precision machining, professional assembly, and intensive quality control.
As you may know, not all rebuilt engines are created equal. As with everything, you get what you pay for. The California Bureau of Automotive Repair and similar agencies in other states maintain no standards for what constitutes a "rebuilt engine". It can be as little as a teardown, inspection and reassembly, with no machining and no new parts replaced if everything "looks O.K." The amount of new parts and machining in a rebuilt engine can vary by as much as several hundred dollars from one rebuilder to another. Let's face it, anybody can rebuild an engine cheaper, but the ultimate life of the engine may be reduced by as much as 75%.
For each machining process, we have chosen the best possible piece of equipment to handle the job. Our case align boring is done on one of several Rottler boring machines to insure maximum accuracy of the bore diameter and alignment. Poorly align bored cases done with various hand held fixtures are a major cause of low oil pressure.
GEX installs case inserts at the base of the head studs in every Type I, II & III engine case. This insures that the head studs will not pull out of the case, a very common weak point in VW engines. We use special made case inserts that have bottoms in them, to prevent oil leaks from occurring around the cylinder head studs. The holes for the case inserts are first drilled, then tapped out 4 at a time using multiple spindle drilling heads on 2 large Clausing drill presses. This insures exact alignment and spacing of each head stud.
The cylinder heads on the Type I, II & III engines have the combustion chambers machined to a configuration that will better accommodate today's lower octane unleaded fuels. This gives you better gas mileage and allows your engine to run cooler, more efficiently, and ultimately to last longer.
On engines with rebuilt heads, the valve guides are replaced with manganese-bronze guides that are harder and more durable than Original Equipment. The valve seats are replaced with chrom-moly alloy steel seats which are extremely hard and allow a high heat transfer rate from the valve to the cylinder head.
In addition, all PREMIUM Type I, II & III engines come with a reground crankshaft and camshaft, resurfaced cam followers, new main, rod and cam bearings, rebuilt connecting rods, new piston and cylinder set, resurfaced flywheel, red silicone flywheel seal and all new push rod tubes. Each engine is extensively tested by our QUALITY CONTROL DEPARTMENT to insure you trouble free operation. This means that even long block engines have carburetors and other accessories temporarily installed on them to actually start them up and run our complete battery of tests to insure you a trouble free product.

PREMIUM Engines, PREMIUM Warranty... Compare GEX with all the others, it's our best endorsement. Before you buy, call the competition. Ask if they even have a WRITTEN warranty, some don't. If you catch one that does, see if it covers a warranty issue on a nationwide basis. Every GEX PREMIUM engine comes with a written Nationwide, No-hassle, 12 month or 12,000 mile Warranty. GEX Hi-performance engines also come with the same 12 month or 12,000 mile warranty. We do not know of any other rebuilder that has this warranty on a performance engine. Before making your decision, ask the competition. Most offer no warranty at all. Some are 30 days and after that you're on your own.
A bit of caution: There are websites out there offering VW engines, that do not list their physical address or even their phone number. If that important information cannot be easily found on their site, there is a reason. It's usually that they're avoiding warranty calls or court process servers. This is not a joke. Don't spend your hard earned cash with somebody in cyberspace that you can't even talk to on the phone. After all, if a problem develops, would you feel comfortable trying to resolve it by email and then not get a reply ???
Also be aware of sites that do not accept credit cards directly and want cash wired to them. Their inability to accept cards is a result of consumer complaints to the credit card processor that cancelled their account. Or websites that offer, after you send your old core in to them, to transfer your accessories over to a rebuilt long block. This is an opportunity to up your price substantially when they find that some of your accessories are not good enough, at a point in time when you're "locked in". Your hard earned money is better spent with a legitimate company that's been around for a while and offers a Premium product, with no gimmicks.
